When does erectile dysfunction usually start?

According to surveys, approximately 30 million American men suffer from erectile dysfunction. While erection problems are more common among men over 50, the condition can affect adult men at any age. Common causes of erectile dysfunction vary by age group. Men leading healthy lifestyles free from chronic disease have the lowest risk for erection problems.

Men age 20 to 40 experience the fewest issues with erectile dysfunction, but the most common causes include stress, anxiety, alcohol abuse, and substance abuse. As men enter middle age, they are more likely to have erection problems for medical reasons. Heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other medical issues affect many men age 40 to 60.

As you get into your 70s, your doctor should start checking your testosterone levels. In addition to the causes already mentioned, lifestyle choices including diet, exercise, and tobacco use can start catching up with men as they age. Regardless of age, if you are experiencing erection problems, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
